Avonlea

Full-flavored, clothbound Cheddar.

Quick Overview:

Award-winning clothbound Cheddar.

Quick Facts

Country of Origin: Prince Edward Island, Canada
Milk Type/Treatment: Raw Cow
Rennet Type: Microbial

The Flavor Experience

Everything you want from a clothbound Cheddar: deep, robust earthiness with underlying tang and a sharp finish.  As full a flavor as you will find in cheese.

The Story

The producers credit Cheddar-making in the Orkney Islands in northern Scotland as the inspiration for this cheese.  All of the milk comes from local farms, which for an island as small as PEI, means under a 20 mile radius. The grass that feed the cattle is grown in iron-rich red soil. Combine that with the sea salt air blowing around the cheese as it ages, and you can taste that earthy minerality.  Avonlea has won Best Clothbound Cheddar at the American Cheese Society three times (2009, 2011 and 2016), and took 3rd place overall - against over 2,000 entries - in 2018.

Usage Tips

As with most clothbound Cheddar, Avonlea is the backbone of the cheese plate.  Think hearty accompaniments, like coarse-ground pate and mustard, pickled green beans and bacon jam
