Brie de Meaux

Sea salted crème fraîche with a bouquet of fruit and mushrooms.

Quick Overview:

Brie de Meaux has a smooth, melty texture; Widely considered to be the best Brie coming out of France.

Quick Facts

Country of Origin: France
Milk Type/Treatment: Pasteurized Cow
Rennet Type: Animal

The Flavor Experience

With the buttery, briny flavor and smooth, oozing paste we expect from a Brie, Brie de Meaux brings also an intense earthiness, laden with notes of wild mushrooms. When it comes to this widely-known style, THIS is the real stuff.

The Story

From its namesake historical region (that would be Brie), Brie de Meaux is considered the paragon of its style, finding global adoration after the Vienna Congress declared it the “King of Cheese” in 1814. It is purported that Charlemagne became an instant fan of this cheese after one bite and that Louis XVI requested a final taste of Brie de Meaux before suspension from the throne. Brie de Meaux received its AOC status in 1980, so you can feel comfortable telling you friends this is “real” Brie.

Usage Tips

The dose of earthiness Brie de Meaux delivers is big enough to handle a deep, red wine. Get the effect, and some red fruit to brighten it up, with Tishbi Cherry Shiraz Jam. Those loamy forest flavors are perfect for another icon of French cuisine: escargot. Top each snail with a tidbit of this Brie each snail before they go in the oven. Crush a few Roman Hazelnuts to sprinkle over top before serving. C’est tres magnifique!

Sorry, this cheese cannot ship via Ground to the western US. Please select expedited shipping upon checkout if shipping west of the Mississippi River. We will make every effort to contact you and suggest a shipping upgrade if you mistakenly select ground shipping.

Was just in Meaux last month. This creamy, mild Brie with an almost flowery finish traveled well from France.
