Comte Essex Fort Lucotte

Brown buttery with a smooth finish.

Quick Overview:

Real deal Comté: aged for over a year, sharp notes of hazelnut and buttered toast.

Quick Facts

Country of Origin: France
Milk Type/Treatment: Raw Cow
Rennet Type: Animal

The Flavor Experience

The middle age range of the three age-profiles from Marcel Petite, Comté Lucotte is a Comté for eating more than it is for melting. Expect a balance of brown-butter and roasted-nut aromas and an eggy, smooth finish.

The Story

Comté is made from the milk of the red-pied Montbeliarde cows, one of two breeds permitted by the Comté AOC designation. (The other is the French Simmental, in case you’re keeping count.) This cheese is produced and aged in the Jura Mountains of France. This range and its 200-million-year-old fossil beds give us the term “Jurassic”. The region may be home to fascinating fossils, but the cheeses sold from the area show us you need not be old to be great.

Usage Tips

A Comté you want to dress up and serve on your next dinner party cheese board. (Or just eat it for dinner yourself.) Add thinly sliced ham, a light drizzle of BLiS vanilla syrup, a side of cornichons or Tishbi Cabernet Onion jam, a glass of your favorite Jura wine or a robust Brown Ale...divine.

Probably the best comte I've ever had. Rich, flavorful--can't go wrong on crackers, in salads, etc.

One of my favorite cheese. We used it in a cheese fondue but stands perfectly well on its own. It has a very balanced taste and smooth finish. Pairs really well with White wines from Bordeaux.
