The Story

The luscious recipe for Gjetost dates back more than 130 years ago in Gudbrandsdalen, Norway. Anne Hov, a farmer’s wife, decided to pour cream into a kettle of whey to create a rich, buttery cheese. Her “fat cheese” fetched a higher price at the local market than butter or cheese alone. Her creative take on cheese became so popular throughout the country, it ended up saving the entire Gudbrandsdalen valley from financial ruin in the 1880s.
